Scaffolding is an integral part of a child's development and can enable them to learn above their zone of actual development. For example a child may learn to write through scaffolding when a teacher or caregiver guides their hands over a pencil to draw a letter. Eventually when the teacher is confident that the child no longer requires assistance they remove their hands and the child will demonstrate that they have learned to draw a particular letter. Another child who has not received the same guidance may not be able to perform above their zone of actual development (M, 158).
