Assimilation is the process of adapting or adjusting to the culture of a group or nation, or the state of being so adapted. On the other hand, multiculturalism is the co-existence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviours, cultural assumptions and values styles. Multiculturalism occurs when different culture groups cohabitant without losing their cultural identities. Assimilation policies for example, would be when you come to Canada and try to be a Canadian as possible in order to fit in.

Nice definition of both concepts. I suggest that after you define what assimilation/multiculturalism, give an example of each to show that you understand completely. It is always helpful to provide an example for a question like this on an exam.
THanks, Ali
