Describe how the concept of social constructionism is related to the concepts of reductionism and individualism in the study of psychological phenomena?
The concept of social constructionism is related to the concepts of reductionism and indivdualism because social constructist often take a non-reductionist approach while studying psychological phenomena. Social construction examines the development of human interaction through shared assumptions of reality. Therefore, they would take a more normative approach to study concepts and use cultural norms, meaning systems and society to explain human behavior. While, reductionist approach can be known to be a causal science where psychologists may attempt to break down concepts into the simplest forms, often using biological methodology. For instance, they may argue that mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and panic attacks are a result of the failure of chemical processes in the brain. In the same notion, individualism focuses individual characteristics and how they cause spefic behaviors. A social constructionist would disagree with this view because they would look at the society as a whole.
